Andrea Cincotta, 52, was found strangled on the floor of her bedroom closet on August 22, 1998. The moment James Christopher Johnson found Andrea Cincotta’s body in the apartment they shared, Arlington homicide detectives were alerted and interrogated him for 28 hours over the course of the following three days.
Chris Johnson and Andrea Cincotta, according to all appearances, were the ideal example of an engaged couple. But on a fateful night in August 1998, Johnson discovered his fiancee dead in a closet in their shared apartment, and that’s when everything changed. Following his confession during three days and 28 hours of questioning, Johnson is identified as the murderer by the police. But when the evidence is inconclusive, they are left wondering: Who actually murdered Andrea Cincotta? The investigation’s twists and turns are covered in a new “20/20” report, along with an exclusive interview with Johnson. Johnson talks about his interactions with the police, what it was like to eventually go on trial for allegedly hiring the man who confessed to killing Cincotta, and how he has handled a falling out with Kevin, Andrea’s son from a previous marriage, who still holds him accountable despite a jury’s not-guilty verdict.
An exclusive interview with Johnson’s wife, Ginnie Grevett, who discusses how the trial has affected their lives, is also included in the two-hour programme. In addition, “20/20” features interviews with Johnson’s friends and family, the defence team’s lawyers Frank Salvato and Libbey Van Pelt, James Trainum, a police interrogation expert who testified on the defense’s behalf, and Washington Post reporter Tom Jackman, who covered the trial. “20/20” will air on ABC on March 10 from 9:01 to 11:00 p.m. EST and on Hulu the following day.
