20/20 “Running Out Of Time” 3/31/23 Episode Summary
It seemed like the beginning of a fairy-tale romance when University of Utah student-athlete Lauren McCluskey met a bouncer at a neighbourhood bar. Lauren’s friends urged her to stop seeing him, though they grew alarmed by his increasingly intrusive behaviour. Soon after, Lauren found out that her boyfriend, Melvin Rowland, a 37-year-old sex offender who had recently been released from prison, wasn’t who he claimed to be. When he started extorting and harassing her, Lauren was shocked and terrified and ended the relationship and reported it to campus police. Lauren was abducted on her way home from class and later discovered dead in a car after pestering campus police, local law enforcement, and school officials for assistance for more than a week.
In a brand-new two-hour “20/20,” host David Muir and ESPN journalists T.J. Quinn and Nicole Noren examine the circumstances surrounding Lauren’s murder and look into the institutional shortcomings of the systems she relied on to keep her safe.
In this two-hour episode of “20/20,” Jill and Matt McCluskey, the parents of Lauren, Sean Reyes, the attorney general of Utah, Miguel Deras, a former campus police officer, Paul Amann, a former assistant attorney general of Utah who prosecuted Rowland for two sex crimes, and Megan Thomson, Rowland’s parole officer, are all interviewed. Additionally, the programme includes interviews with Courtney Tanner, the lead reporter for the story for the Salt Lake Tribune, Todd Reed, the former news director of KTVX/ABC4 (Salt Lake City), Diamond Jackson, Lauren’s friend and university housing advisor, two of Lauren’s closest friends, and a woman who dated Rowland. “20/20” will air on ABC on March 31 from 9:01 to 11:00 p.m. EDT and on Hulu the following day.
Part of ESPN’s four-year investigation into McCluskey’s murder is “20/20: Running Out of Time.” On Tuesday, March 28, ESPN debuted “LISTEN,” a 90-minute investigative documentary about the reporting and revelations surrounding the murder of McCluskey. “LISTEN” is currently streaming on ESPN+ and ESPN+ on Hulu.
