20/20 “The Last Strike” 3/17/23 Episode Summary

In January 2020, mother-of-two Nikki Entzel reported a fire in her North Dakota home. When police arrived, they discovered her husband Chad Entzel’s badly burned body still inside. As the investigation progressed, contradictions at the crime scene and in Nikki’s account made it clear that something more sinister was at work. The perilous love triangle between Nikki, Chad, and Earl Howard and how it ended in murder and arson is the subject of a new “20/20” report. Shocking security camera footage capturing the activities leading up to the crime is featured in the two-hour programme. The episode also includes an exclusive jailhouse interview conducted by ABC News correspondent John Quiones with Nikki, who discusses her relationships with both men and what she believes actually happened to her husband.

Exclusive police interrogation tapes from “20/20” feature Earl Howard providing his first-ever account of the events. The programme includes tapes and additional interviews with investigators and authorities who worked on the case, including Julie Lawyer, the state’s solicitor for Burleigh County who prosecuted the case; Mike Meese and Joe Arenz, special agents with the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigations; Aaron Silbernagel, a former sergeant with the Burleigh County Sheriff’s department; and Chad’s friends and family, including his sister Lori Kraus and his ex-wife Susie Entzel.

Police repeatedly heard Nikki Entzel’s inconsistent account of what happened to her husband during a thorough investigation into his murder, which frequently conflicted with the evidence they had gathered.

Exclusive access to a one-on-one interview with the woman recently found guilty of planning to murder her husband, Chad Entzel, was granted to “20/20” so that they could question her about specifics of the case. Entzel insisted on her innocence throughout the interview.

A thorough investigation resulted in his wife’s trial and conviction, as well as that of Earl Howard, a married Canadian man with whom she had recently begun an affair, according to the police. Authorities theorised that they intended to flee with the insurance money and reunite in Texas.

In the end, Howard entered pleas of guilty to a number of accusations, including arson and murder conspiracy. Prosecutors agreed to drop a murder charge as part of the plea bargain. He received a 25-year prison term in February 2022.

But Nikki Entzel had to go to court. She was found guilty of conspiring to commit murder, arson, and to tamper with physical evidence in October 2022, and in February 2023, she was given a life sentence with the possibility of parole.
