20/20 “You’ve Got Jail” 3/24/23 Episode Summary
Sharee Miller, a Michigan mother of three, was caught in the middle of a convoluted love triangle. She set up a love match between Bruce Miller, her unknowing husband, and Jerry Cassaday, a former police officer and casino employee she met online. She did this using the internet, deception, and sex. Miller lied about losing several pregnancies to Bruce in online talks with Cassaday, whom she falsely claimed to have beaten physically and having connections to the mafia. Both men passed away shortly after she made these false statements. Miller spoke with “Nightline” co-anchor Juju Chang more than 20 years after she was given a life sentence. Miller reads an apology letter she made to a victim while admitting to her misdeeds and explaining her unexpected motivation.
The episode features a recording of Miller’s police questioning as well as obscene movies she sent Cassaday online in an effort to assert control over him and further entice him into her plan. The episode also features interviews with Bruce’s brother and sister-in-law, Chuck and Judy Miller; Mike Cassaday; Charlene Cassaday; James Cassaday; Kevin Shanlian, the case’s lead detective; Marcie Mabry, the Genesee County assistant prosecutor; John Hutchinson, who was once mistakenly identified as the murder victim who Miller tried to point investigators towards; and other family members and friends. “20/20” will air on ABC on March 24 from 9:01 to 11:00 p.m. EDT and on Hulu the following day.
