From David Modell Productions for ITV Exposure THE CROSSING: EXPOSURE Monday 14th November 2022 on ITV Pictured: Border Force (left) intercept an inflatable dinghy of migrants crossing the English Channel. One year ago, at least thirty-one people died when a dinghy - crowded with men, women and children heading to the UK to claim asylum - capsized. It was the worst maritime disaster in the English Channel for thirty years. Yet, as political debate over small boats crossing the Channel intensifies, little has been publicly established about what really happened that night. Made over the last year, this film for the Bafta-winning Exposure strand pieces together the journeys some passengers made and how the tragedy unfolded - using testimony from victims' families and speaking in depth for the first time to one of its only two survivors. It tells a story of desperate passengers making emergency calls being told help was on its way, only for it never to arrive - and reveals the identities of some of the men believed to be responsible who have yet to be brought to justice. As the government stands accused of not giving answers, this programme lays bare a catastrophic failure of border control.
