The male exotic dance group Chippendales rose to fame in the 1980s and 1990s, becoming a global cultural phenomenon. “20/20” delves deeply into the murky history of greed, paranoia, and murder that led to their rise. Steve Banerjee achieved the fame and money he had always desired by founding Chippendales, but his passion was unquenchable. “20/20” details the terrifying tales of how Banerjee planned to kill anyone who he thought stood in his way, including the horrifying murder-for-hire schemes against close business colleagues and members of a rival male dance company, as well as an alleged blackmail scheme against a club client.
As “20/20” revisits this gripping story of passion, greed, and murder, Kumail Nanjiani, who portrays Banerjee in Hulu’s most recent smash hit “Welcome to Chippendales,” gets down to talk about portraying the notorious club owner on the show that is sweeping Hollywood.
The two-hour programme includes interviews with Read Scot, a former Chippendales dancer who discusses being the target of a foiled murder-for-hire plot, Scott Garriola, a retired FBI special agent who was instrumental in catching and arresting Banerjee, and Natalia Mehlman Petrzela, a historian and host of “Welcome To Your Fantasy,” a well-known podcast on Chippendales.
