In A Voyage to the South Sea by William Bligh, an autobiography detailing the maritime excursion of the HMS Bounty, including the Mutiny on the Bounty on 28 April 1789 he writes “My first determination was to seek a supply of breadfruit and water at Tofoa, and afterwards to sail for Tongataboo, and there risk a solicitation to Poulaho the king to equip our boat and grant us a supply of water and provisions, so as to enable us to reach the East Indies.”

In the infamous Mutiny on the Bounty, Lieutenant William Bligh and eighteen loyalists were cast adrift in the ship’s open launch by disgruntled crew members under the leadership of acting-Lieutenant Fletcher Christian. The mutineers made various settlements on Pitcairn Island or Tahiti.
