Episode Summary
One of the finest Jacobean homes in the UK is Audley End House in Essex, where John Craven and Charlotte Smith are currently staying. Even though they may arrive in style, they are quickly sent to the servants’ entrance to help out with winter maintenance and cleaning. Along with learning the origins of some of the house’s eclectic collection of thousands of artefacts, John and Charlotte also learn the nuances of cleaning delicate seashells and why skimmed milk is great for cleaning flagstone floors. As Charlotte takes on groom duties in the stables, she must conquer her fear of horses as well as an ancient vine. Charlotte describes the difficulties faced by the rural midwife while Adam Henson is occupied making sure his animals are in top condition to survive a harsh winter.
