Final Jeopardy Explanation – Wednesday, January 18 2023

Between February 1692 and May 1693, a series of hearings and trials for those accused of witchcraft took place in colonial Massachusetts now known as the Salem Witch Trials.

Increase Mather, Harvard College president and prominent sage in the Bay, said in Cases of Conscience Concerning Evil Spirits, defending the Salem Witch Trials and the judges, but also expressed words of caution by saying that “It were preferable that ten alleged witches should escape than that one innocent person be condemned.”

Mather argued against the use of spectral evidence to back up convictions on moral grounds and with the authority of his education. As a result, many witchfinders lost their credibility, and it was believed that the ill were possessed rather than bewitched.
