Season 1 Episode 1 Episode Summary
A cast of hip-hop legends and prominent African-American and Latino cultural commentators, led by Public Enemy’s Chuck D, trace the events that led to the emergence of the revolutionary art form of hip-hop in 1970s New York as well as the production of the landmark song The Message.
They paint a picture of how, following the turmoil of the 1960s and the civil rights struggles, hopeless social conditions and the experiences of numerous evicted people of colour living in a city beset by crisis helped give birth to a new art form.
