The Tropic of Capricorn, one of the five major circles of latitude indicated on maps of Earth, received its name because, on the December solstice (the Winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere), the sun rose directly overhead in the constellation Capricornus.
When the sun was at its zenith during the December solstice, it was at its most southern latitude for the year, and this is when these constellations received their names 2,000 years ago. These days, the sun is now in Sagittarius during the Winter Solstice at its southernmost point.
