Humza: Forgiving the Unforgivable 23 January 2023 on BBC One

Tonight (Monday 23 January 2023), BBC One broadcasts an episode of the series Humza: Forgiving the Unforgivable!

Episode Summary

What happens if your faith compels you to forgive even though your instincts tell you to seek revenge? Humza Arshad, a stand-up comedian and internet sensation, sets out on an occasionally uncomfortable journey to see if unresolved grudges can be forgotten.

A group of young men attacked Humza’s cousin brutally and without provocation when he was a teenager, shattering and scarring the family. Humza is compelled to look for strategies to control the rage he feels towards the perpetrators now that they have escaped justice. He seeks out other people who have gained notoriety by pardoning their assailants, including a father whose sons were killed by Birmingham rioters, a mother whose daughter perished in the Manchester Arena bombing, and an Imam who survived a heinous racist knife crime.

Humza, who is struggling with his inability to forgive, has a chance encounter with a murderer and contends with a “forgiveness academic.” He must face the past and seek a path forward with the aid of his blunt-speaking mother, his faith, and his special sense of humour. Despite having over 100 million YouTube views, an MBE for his work in education, and over 240,000 Instagram followers, Humza’s fame and notoriety haven’t done much to help him prepare for his current mission. This might be his most difficult job to date.
