As a 72 year old white woman, I found the Vashti Harrison story very poignant but enlightening too. She has such great themes in her books and I especially love the characters and illustrations. The underlying stories can be educational for ALL kids regardless of ethnicity. I just had to look up the story of Sulwe to see why it was banned in Florida. I still don’t get it. I have never been a fan of banning books and on the flip side…never been a fan of erasing history either. I think the only way to heal is to recognize the awful things from the past and improve on them now. I believe Vashti is doing this through her children’s books! Kudos for this story!
