Sudan was the largest country by area in Africa until the secession of South Sudan in 2011.
In a referendum held in January 2011, 98.83% of voters within Southern Sudan voted to become independent. South Sudan became independent on July 9, 2011, which is now celebrated as indepenence day within South Sudan.
Since the succession, Algeria now holds the title of largest country in area within Africa.
