Helen of Troy was a Greek mythological figure who was said to be the most beautiful woman in the world. She is referred to as “the face that launched a thousand ships” in Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus.
When Theseus kidnapped Helen, Castor and Pollux invaded his kingdom of Attica to rescue her. They kidnapped Theseus’ mother Aethra and transported her to Sparta in retaliation, while installing his rival, Menestheus, on the throne of Athens. Helen then compelled Aethra to serve as her slave. Her grandsons Demophon and Acamas returned her to her home after Troy fell.
After Paris of Troy had taken her from her husband Menelaus, King of Sparta, the Achaeans (Greeks) waged the Trojan War against the city of Troy later in her life.
