Congress relented in 1890 after this prospective state said it would wait 100 years rather than come in without the women
Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Wyoming
Final Jeopardy Explanation
In 1869, the Wyoming Territory became the first region in the United States to enact a law granting women the right to vote.
Even when it later threatened their petition for statehood, local officials there remained steadfast in their commitment to suffrage. They warned Congress, which finally gave in and let them in in 1890, that they would rather stay outside the Union for a century than allow women to join.
The Wyoming legislature stated to Congress, via a telegram from Joseph M. Carey who later became governor of Wyoming, “We will stay out of the Union a hundred years rather than come in without our women.”
