Armed robbers took gold valued at £26 million in November 1983 from the Brink’s-Mat security depot close to London’s Heathrow airport. The nation watched in awe as the robbers made off with 6,800 gold bars, which, at today’s prices, would be worth close to £100 million. Before the gold was smelted, covered up, and sold again on the open market, the police were in a race against time.
