He served with an airman named Yohannan in World War II & despite what readers might think, he said he enjoyed his service
Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Joseph Heller
Final Jeopardy Explanation
Francis Yohannan, a World War II aviator, served as the model for the main character in Joseph Heller’s darkly humorous book “Catch-22.”
When Yohannan and Heller were both bombardiers stationed on Corsica in 1944, they grew close.
The title of Heller’s 1961 book alluded to how difficult it was to get out of risky bombing flights. Being deemed mad may result in a pilot being grounded, yet being scared of such danger was viewed as practically proof of sanity.
Heller claimed in a 1998 interview that Yohannan was whence he “got the unusual moniker for the heretical Yossarian.”
In a 1974 letter, Heller said that “How did I feel about the war when I was in it? Much differently than Yossarian felt and much differently than I felt when I wrote the novel … In truth I enjoyed it and so did just about everyone else I served with, in training and even in combat”, in contrast to the themes of the book itself.
