Pip, who is heartbroken over being turned away from Satis House, is discovered by Mr. Jaggers in a miserable state and informed that Miss Havisham and Miss Estella have sent him. Estella actually does not want Pip to travel with Mr. Jaggers, but Pip is unaware of this and is instead impressed by Jaggers’ cosmopolitan presence and the offer he makes: a check for £5,000, a place to live in London, and a job in his law firm.
