Stephenson’s conception of the future of an Internet based on virtual reality dates back to the 1992 novel Snow Crash, when he invented the term “Metaverse” to refer to it. The Metaverse, which resembles a massively multiplayer online game (MMO), is filled with system daemons and user-controlled avatars.

In 2021, Facebook renamed itself Meta, a shortened form of the word Metaverse.
