The Praetorian Guard was an elite division of the Roman Imperial army that protected the emperors’ lives and acted as spies. The Praetorian Guard served as a bodyguard for the top Roman Legion officers as well as an escort for high-ranking senators and procurators throughout the Roman Republic. The Praetorians were chosen by Augustus, the first emperor of Rome, to serve as his personal security guards in 27 BC, after Rome had changed from a republic to an empire.
