Lamar Johnson: Standing in Truth 4/29/23 Episode Summary

Lamar Johnson was 21 years old when he was charged with murdering a buddy, Markus Boyd, in 1995. Johnson claimed he was thousands of miles away with his fiancée and daughter, but he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison based entirely on the evidence of Greg Elking, who chose Johnson from a police lineup. Johnson’s conviction was overturned nearly three decades later after Elking recanted his identification of Johnson. Now, Johnson tells 48 HOURS correspondent Erin Moriarty about his quest to prove his innocence, and Elking explains why he lied during Johnson’s trial. “Lamar Johnson: Standing in Truth” will premiere on the CBS Television Network on Saturday, April 29 (10:00 PM ET/PT) and will be streamed on Paramount+.

“You feel like you’re in a hole or a sewer, and you’re looking up and… calling out for help from people, and people are walking by because they don’t hear you,” Johnson describes his time in prison to Moriarty.

Years later, when working on Johnson’s case, The Midwest Innocence Project found in a letter to a clergyman that Elking had recanted his trial testimony. Nonetheless, the matter remained dormant until 2018, when the St. Louis circuit attorney’s office, led by Kimberly Gardner, decided to reconsider the conviction. A year later, her team issued a detailed study outlining various flaws in Lamar Johnson’s conviction. Following a change in Missouri legislation, a judge heard his case at an innocence hearing in December 2022, and Johnson was exonerated two months later.

Did it occur to Greg Elking that he might have imprisoned an innocent man?

“Yes, without a doubt,” he says to Moriarty. “I lied because I thought I was doing the right thing.”
