Final Jeopardy Answer

The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Benedict Arnold

Final Jeopardy Explanation

Benedict Arnold, born January 14, 1741, is most infamously known for his role as a traitor during the American Revolutionary War. He began as an American military officer, fighting with distinction in the Continental Army under General George Washington. However, disillusioned with his treatment by the Continental Congress and facing financial difficulties, he conspired to switch sides and join the British forces.

Arnold’s plot to surrender the strategically important West Point fort to the British was discovered in 1780, but he managed to escape capture. He subsequently served as a Brigadier General in the British Army, leading raids against American forces.

After the war, Arnold moved to London, where he lived out the remainder of his life. He died on June 14, 1801, and was buried at St. Mary’s Church in Battersea, London. His headstone reads “Sometime General in the Army of George Washington” and later notes that “The two nations whom he served in turn in the years of the enmity have united in enduring friendship”.
