Charlotte Smith and Matt Baker embark on a journey to Upper Teesdale in the Durham Dales, where they pay tribute to an extraordinary woman dedicated to preserving one of the most significant botanical sites in the United Kingdom. Their mission is not only to honor this remarkable lady but also to meet the individuals who are working tirelessly to safeguard the diverse species that inhabit this area.
During her expedition, Charlotte encounters Dr. Margaret Bradshaw, a 97-year-old botanist, on Widdy Bank Fell. Driven by her passion for the past 70 years, Margaret has been at the forefront of classifying, surveying, and safeguarding the unique Arctic and alpine flora that constitute the exceptional Teesdale assemblage. Charlotte learns about Margaret’s efforts in the 1960s when she fought against the construction of a reservoir on the very site where these extraordinary wildflowers thrived. Although her campaign was unsuccessful, Margaret’s determination led her to establish the Teesdale Special Flora Trust, an organization responsible for the preservation of this precious habitat. Joining the trust, Charlotte partakes in surveys aimed at studying botanical treasures such as the spring gentian and lady’s mantle.
Meanwhile, Matt teams up with the Durham Wildlife Trust as they conduct surveys of endangered ground-nesting wading birds. They utilize innovative sound monitoring posts capable of distinguishing individual species’ calls, providing accurate calculations of bird populations in the area. Additionally, Matt collaborates with the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust, who employ remote camera traps to document predator activity while monitoring threatened bird species.
Adam embarks on a new endeavor, expanding his activities into farming wildflower meadows. Simultaneously, Tom investigates the potential consequences of proposals to ban the production of one billion fast-bred chickens annually in the UK.
