Countryfile “Argyll Hope Spot” 11 June 2023 on BBC One

Tonight (Sunday 11 June 2023), BBC One broadcasts an episode of the series Countryfile!

Episode Summary

The Galapagos Islands and the Great Barrier Reef are two of the world’s 151 “hope spots.” They are regions that have been recognised by their local communities as being essential to the wellbeing of the oceans.

Hamza Yassin travels to the Argyll Coast and Islands, the only ones in the UK. Hamza meets marine researcher Chris Rickard and learns that the region was given hope spot designation in 2019 because it is the only place in the world where the highly endangered flapper skate has been found to raise its only known nursery. Chris is joined by Hamza as they look for additional nursery locations in an effort to learn more about these enigmatic undersea critters.

In Oban, Hamza also runs into RSPB Officer Dave Sexton to witness the incredibly rare sight of black guillemots, who generally dwell far out at sea, coexisting with town residents along the harbour. We also get to know the people behind sea wilding, a community-driven effort to restore native seagrass and oysters in the UK using a ground-breaking method.

Adam Henson examines the advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence that have the potential to transform UK agriculture. At the Wilder Blean project in Kent, John Craven is searching for extinct animal species like bison and long-horned cattle that have been imported to rewild a former industrial pine plantation. As John opens this year’s picture competition in support of Children in Need, cameras are ready.
