Today’s Final Jeopardy 6/15/2023 (The U.S. Government) – Thursday, June 15 2023
Established in 1938, this congressional group was still issuing subpoenas in 1969 & finally ceased to exist 6 years later
Today’s Final Jeopardy Answer – Thursday, June 15 2023
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC)
Final Jeopardy Explanation – Thursday, June 15 2023
The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), an investigating body of the U.S. House of Representatives, was established in 1938 with the purpose of inquiring into alleged disloyalty and subversive actions by individuals or groups thought to have Communist affiliations. While it was originally planned as a temporary committee, it gained permanent status in 1945.
Throughout the late 1940s and 1950s, HUAC was particularly recognized for its investigations into presumed communist threats within the United States, notably within the Hollywood film industry. This led to the notorious Hollywood blacklist, a practice of denying individuals employment in the industry based on their political beliefs or associations, irrespective of whether they were proven or merely suspected.
Despite its diminishing influence from the late 1950s onwards, HUAC continued to operate and issue subpoenas until 1969. Eventually, in 1975, the committee was dissolved, and its responsibilities were transferred to the House Judiciary Committee. Notwithstanding its official disbandment, the legacy of HUAC endures, as it played a significant role in the Red Scare that characterized the early years of the Cold War.
