Native Americans called it Okwa-ta, or “wide water”; Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville would rename it for a countryman
Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Lake Pontchartrain
Final Jeopardy Explanation
Lake Pontchartrain is an large estuary situated in southeastern Louisiana, USA. Native American tribes in the region, before the arrival of Europeans, named it Okwa-ta, translating to “wide water.”
It was later renamed by the French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville after Louis Phélypeaux, comte de Pontchartrain, the French Minister of Marine at the time of d’Iberville’s exploration of the area.
Covering an area of 630 square miles, Lake Pontchartrain is one of the largest inland bodies of water in the United States. The lake is known for the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, recognized by the Guinness World Records as the longest continuous bridge passing over water, with its two parallel spans reaching a total length of approximately 24 miles.
