In November 2022, Jeff Bezos and is partner, Lauren Sanchez, announced that they were awarding the 2022 Bezos Courage and Civility Award to Dolly Parton. The award recognises “leaders who aim high, find solutions and who always do it with civility” and the awardee “receives $100 million to direct to the charities that they see fit“.

Dolly Parton is known for her humanitarian work. In 2020, she supported the development of the Moderna Covid vaccine by donating $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s coronavirus research. Parton is also the founder of the Dollywood Foundation, responsible for the Imagination Library, a program that sends free, high-quality books to over a million children globally every month. In 2021, she invested her royalties from Whitney Houston’s version of her song “I Will Always Love You” in a Nashville strip mall, benefiting the local Black community.
