The author of this unfinished epic poem was unsure if he wanted the title character to “end in hell – or in an unhappy marriage”
Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Don Juan
Final Jeopardy Explanation
Don Juan is a satiric poem by Lord Byron based loosely on the legendary character of Don Juan, who is notorious for his many illicit love affairs. Lord Byron was unsure about the ultimate fate of his title character, remarking in jest that he wasn’t sure if he wanted Don Juan to “end in hell – or in an unhappy marriage.”
In Byron’s portrayal, Don Juan is more of an innocent who is easily seduced by women. The poem, written in ottava rima, is known for its humor, social commentary, and sharp satirical style.
Although it is known as Byron’s masterpiece, “Don Juan” was left unfinished at the time of his death in 1824. The uncertainty surrounding Don Juan’s fate is reflective of the poem’s generally fluid and open-ended structure, which Byron used to digress into extensive commentary on his contemporary society.
