Clones of an original one of these grow outside the math faculty at Cambridge University & in the President’s garden at M.I.T.

Today’s Final Jeopardy is referring to the apple tree that is a descendant of the one associated with Sir Isaac Newton’s discovery of gravity. The story goes that Newton was sitting under an apple tree when an apple fell on his head, prompting him to develop his law of universal gravitation.

Cambridge University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T) both have clones of this famous apple tree growing in prominent places on their campuses as a symbol of scientific discovery and innovation. These trees were grown from cuttings taken from the original tree, which is still alive and located at Woolsthorpe Manor, Newton’s birthplace in England.
