PATHOGEN X – Join Bill Whitaker as he embarks on a crucial mission to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda alongside a team of American and Ugandan scientists. Together, they venture deep into the primeval forest to search for Pathogen X, the next potential deadly virus capable of jumping from wild animals to humans. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the urgency to find and understand these viruses has never been greater. 60 Minutes goes on a thrilling journey with the virus hunters as they test bats, baboons, and monkeys in their quest to identify and contain potential outbreaks. Heather Abbott spearheads this enlightening report.

SONA AND THE KORA – Lesley Stahl brings us an enchanting profile of Sona Jobarteh, the first female virtuoso player of the kora, a centuries-old West African instrument. The kora, with its 21 strings, combines the elegance of a harp, the soulfulness of a lute, and the melodic charm of a guitar. Traditionally, kora-playing skills were passed down solely from father to son within select griot families in West Africa. However, Jobarteh, at 39 years old and a descendant of one of those griot families, is breaking with tradition, asserting that by doing so, she is preserving the musical heritage. With Gambian roots from her father and British heritage from her mother, Jobarteh has defied norms and won acceptance, even in the toughest of places: The Gambia. With a hit song that has become the country’s unofficial anthem, she is truly making her mark. Shari Finkelstein orchestrates this feature.
