Today’s Final Jeopardy 9/15/2023 (Astronomy) – Friday, September 15 2023
The only dwarf planet located in the inner solar system, it’s named for an ancient deity of planting & harvests
Today’s Final Jeopardy Answer – Friday, September 15 2023
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Ceres
Final Jeopardy Explanation – Friday, September 15 2023
Ceres holds the distinction of being the sole dwarf planet located in the inner solar system. It takes its name from the Roman deity associated with farming, grain, fertility, and maternal bonds.
Discovered for the first time in 1801, Ceres is the most substantial body in the asteroid belt that lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Measuring approximately 940 kilometers (or 584 miles) in diameter, this celestial object is notable for its considerable reserves of water ice.
Scientists have shown a keen interest in Ceres due to its potential to reveal secrets about the formative years of the solar system. NASA’s Dawn spacecraft, which launched in 2007, arrived at Ceres in 2015 and gathered essential information about its make-up, surface features, and curious luminous areas in its craters. Subsequent research indicated that these bright regions are actually deposits of salt, suggesting a history of subsurface water activity and raising questions about the conditions for life as we understand it.
