First name of the paleontologist who in 1990 noticed some large vertebrae jutting from an eroding bluff in South Dakota
Today’s Final Jeopardy Answer – Thursday, September 21 2023
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Sue
Final Jeopardy Explanation – Thursday, September 21 2023
Sue Hendrickson was the paleontologist who discovered large vertebrae protruding from a weathered bluff in South Dakota in 1990. This groundbreaking discovery led to the unearthing of one of the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons ever found. The specimen itself was also named “Sue” in honor of the discoverer.
Sue Hendrickson made the momentous discovery during a break in her team’s fossil hunting expedition. The team, led by Peter Larson, decided to depart due to vehicle trouble, but Hendrickson chose to explore a nearby cliff. There, she noticed the T. rex vertebrae sticking out. The subsequent excavation revealed a remarkably well-preserved and nearly complete T. rex skeleton.
A long legal battle ensued over the ownership of the skeleton, involving the landowner, the federal government, and the Black Hills Institute, which was the organization responsible for the dig. Eventually, the U.S. government seized the fossil and auctioned it off.
The Field Museum in Chicago won the auction and became the permanent home for the T. rex, commonly referred to as “Sue.”
