Today’s Final Jeopardy 10/16/2023 (The Nobel Prize in Physics) – Monday, October 16 2023
Barry Barish, who shared the 2017 prize for detecting gravitational waves, called his award “a win for” this predecessor
Today’s Final Jeopardy Answer – Monday, October 16 2023
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Albert Einstein
Final Jeopardy Explanation – Monday, October 16 2023
In 2017, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for the groundbreaking discovery of gravitational waves, a concept that was first theorized by Albert Einstein as part of his general theory of relativity in 1915. Barry Barish, who shared this honor with Rainer Weiss and Kip Thorne, described the award as a “win for Einstein.”
Einstein had hypothesized that cataclysmic cosmic events, like the collision of black holes, would produce ripples in the fabric of spacetime known as gravitational waves. For a long time, the technology needed to detect such faint ripples was not available. However, technological breakthroughs in laser and engineering fields eventually made detection possible, culminating in the historic 2016 announcement.
Barish, Weiss, and Thorne were all key figures in the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, short for Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. This ambitious project spanned decades and involved an international team of scientists and extensive research. The realization of Einstein’s theory through this experiment marked a significant milestone in the world of physics.
