What Happened to Dwayne Demkiw & Killer Jason Steadman?
Jason Steadman found guilty of first-degree murder in the 2015 killing of Dwayne Demkiw, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years.
During the trial, the court heard from 92 witnesses from various provinces and the United States. Demkiw’s family members, who had to travel from Saskatchewan for court proceedings, read emotional victim impact statements prior to sentencing. They described the profound loss they endured, the hardships associated with the trial, and the pain of being unable to hold a memorial until the legal process concluded.
Dwayne Demkiw was last seen alive on May 31, 2015. His car was discovered on fire in Calgary shortly after his disappearance, leading to a missing person investigation. Tragically, his remains were found in a wooded area near Innisfail on April 5, 2016.
On the last day he was alive, Demkiw spent time planning a trip to Disney World and attended a birthday dinner for a close friend, Kalya Polihronopoulos. Polihronopoulos testified about their friendship and activities, stating that Demkiw appeared fine during the dinner and did not seem to have any injuries.
The evening continued with Demkiw driving a limousine bus for a bachelor party, where he arranged for an exotic dancer to join the group. Witnesses who interacted with Demkiw that night described him as reserved but seemingly in good spirits. Exotic dancer Shannon Kunz, known as Hilary, mentioned Demkiw’s easy-going and friendly nature. She recalled the last words she said to Demkiw as she helped him clean the bus, expressing, “Hey buddy, see you next time.”
Demkiw exchanged text messages with his roommate, Bryan Ballendine, in the early hours of May 31. Surveillance video showed Demkiw leaving the limousine bay at 4:04 a.m. However, he never returned home. His disappearance led to growing concern among friends and family, with Ballendine becoming increasingly worried as hours passed without any contact from Demkiw.
Jason Steadman, who had been dating Angel Chalifoux, Demkiw’s ex-partner. Witnesses who knew Steadman as Robert Maxwell testified that they had not observed any conflicts between him and Demkiw during past gatherings. It was revealed that Steadman and Chalifoux had recently broken up before Demkiw’s death.
Steadman was extradited from the United States to Canada to face the first-degree murder charge. In court, Steadman was given the opportunity to speak but declined to do so. His sentence includes life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years, a concurrent three-year sentence for arson, and a lifetime weapons ban.
