The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Ulysses S. Grant
Final Jeopardy Explanation – Monday, November 20 2023
The first of the seven U.S. Presidents born in Ohio, who entered West Point in 1839, is Ulysses S. Grant. Grant, the 18th President of the United States, served two terms from 1869 to 1877.
Born on April 27, 1822, in Point Pleasant, Ohio, Grant’s admission to the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1839 set the stage for a distinguished military career.
During the Civil War, Grant emerged as a decisive and skilled leader. His victories at battles like Vicksburg and Chattanooga were pivotal, and he gained a reputation for his aggressive tactics and determination. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln appointed him as the commanding general of the Union Army, where he led a series of campaigns that eventually forced the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in 1865, effectively ending the war.
As President, Grant’s tenure was a time of Reconstruction, where the country struggled to rebuild and redefine itself after the Civil War. He advocated for the rights of freed slaves and worked to quash the violent activities of groups like the Ku Klux Klan. Under his leadership, the 15th Amendment, granting African American men the right to vote, was ratified.
