What Happened to Tahereh Ghassemi?
The tragic events unfolded following the contentious divorce between Tahereh and Hamid Ghassemi, with Hamid ordered to pay a significant divorce settlement. Hamid provided the men with weapons and a syringe before they ambushed Tahereh. After a struggle, Richter and the others injected her with insulin, rendering her unconscious. They then loaded her into her car and followed Richter to a gravesite, but they couldn’t find the pre-dug holes. They ultimately shot Tahereh in the head, buried her in a shallow grave, and burned her car.
Hamed Ghassemi, the son of the victim, reported his mother missing on the same day her body was discovered.
Daniel Humberto Richter, one of the three men accused of kidnapping and killing Tahereh Ghassemi shortly after her divorce from a Baton Rouge automobile dealer, accepted a plea deal to avoid a potential life sentence. Richter, who worked for the ex-husband, Hamid Ghassemi, pleaded guilty to manslaughter for his involvement in the murder-for-hire plot in April 2015.
Richter’s role in the scheme included recruiting others, specifically Skyler Williams and Tyler Lee Ashpaugh, to assist in the abduction and killing. The trio abducted Tahereh Ghassemi from her home at gunpoint and transported her to a remote area in St. Helena Parish, where Ashpaugh fatally shot her multiple times in the head. They concealed her body beneath brush.
Initially facing a first-degree murder charge with a mandatory life sentence if convicted, Richter agreed to plead guilty to manslaughter and received a 30-year prison term as part of the plea deal. This marks the second time Richter has taken a plea deal in this high-profile case. In 2018, he had pleaded guilty to manslaughter and second-degree kidnapping, agreeing to cooperate with prosecutors. However, he later withdrew his pleas and reneged on his promise to testify against his co-defendants.
Skyler Williams, aged 25, also pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received a 30-year sentence in exchange for his plea. The details of whether Richter or Williams would testify against Hamid Ghassemi, the accused mastermind, remain undisclosed due to the sealing of their plea agreements at the request of prosecutors and their defense attorneys.
Tyler Lee Ashpaugh, who had previously accepted a plea deal and agreed to testify against his co-defendants, passed away while in custody.
