On a September morning in 2020, police officer Gregorio De La Cruz responded to a troubling call at a residence in Laredo, Texas. The scene was fraught with urgency as Joel Pellot, wearing surgical attire, tried to revive his wife, Maria Muñoz, through CPR. Sadly, less than three hours after the 911 call, Maria, aged 31, was pronounced dead. The circumstances surrounding her tragic demise raised a haunting question: was it suicide, an accident, or something more sinister? This enigmatic case took a surprising turn when investigators turned to Maria’s personal journals for clues.
During the 911 call, Joel had mentioned the possibility of his wife ingesting pills. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered a bottle of clonazepam, a drug prescribed to Joel but found near Maria. Dr. John Huntsinger, an anesthesiologist and Joel’s former employer, immediately harbored suspicions. He raised enough concerns to prompt Sergeant Luis Mata, the lead detective, to order a comprehensive toxicology screening. Several months later, the results were nothing short of astounding: Maria’s body had no clonazepam, but it contained seven other drugs, including the infamous propofol.
