Gnawa

Bill Whitaker embarks on a musical journey that spans centuries. He traces the legacy of Gnawa music, a tradition that was once played in secret ceremonies by enslaved Black Africans brought to Morocco during the Middle Ages. These ancient rhythms played a pivotal role in the birth of the American blues. Today, Gnawa music is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Whitaker immerses himself in the heart of Gnawa culture, visiting the seaside town of Essaouira on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, which is considered the ground zero of Gnawa music. Here, he meets Gnawa masters and Western musicians who join them for a taste of the Moroccan blues. This captivating segment is also double-length and is produced by Heather Abbott.
