The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Stethoscope
Final Jeopardy Explanation
The device invented in 1816 that takes its name from the Greek for “chest” (stethos) and “observe” (skopos) is the stethoscope. The stethoscope, an essential tool in medicine, was invented by the French physician René Laennec. It was initially a simple wooden tube that helped amplify the sounds of the heart and lungs when placed against the chest.
Over the years, the stethoscope has evolved into a more advanced instrument, but its fundamental purpose remains the same – allowing healthcare professionals to listen to internal sounds of the body, primarily in the chest, such as the heartbeat and lung sounds. The name “stethoscope” aptly reflects its function of observing or examining the chest.
