In the 20s B.C., Octavia Minor, the sister of Emperor Augustus, had a household that could indeed be described as having the makings of a sitcom. Among its members were the boy and girl twin children of Mark Antony and Cleopatra. These twins, Alexander Helios and Cleopatra Selene II, came to live with Octavia following the defeat of their parents by Octavian (later Augustus) and their subsequent deaths.
Octavia, known for her virtue and dignity, was previously married to Mark Antony before he became involved with Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt. After Antony and Cleopatra’s demise, Octavia took in their three children: Alexander Helios, Cleopatra Selene, and Ptolemy Philadelphus, raising them in Rome alongside her own children. This unique family situation, blending Roman and Egyptian lineage and entwining the fates of former political and romantic rivals, indeed had elements that one might find in a modern-day drama or sitcom.
