In the 1920s, the artist Alexander Calder used wire, string, and other materials to create “models in motion” for a miniature circus scene. This work was known as “Cirque Calder” and showcased Calder’s innovative approach to art, blending sculpture with performance. His miniature circus featured a variety of figures, including acrobats, animals, and ringmasters, crafted meticulously from wire, wood, cloth, and other found materials.

These figures were not only sculptures but also functional, as Calder would manipulate them in live performances, effectively bringing the circus to life. This work laid the groundwork for what would later become his famous mobiles, establishing Calder as a pioneer in kinetic sculpture and significantly contributing to the evolution of modern art.
