What Happened to Raymond Wright?
In a case that unfolded over several years and was driven by a deep-seated grudge, two individuals were recently convicted of the murder of a Rocklin father, Raymond Wright, whose body remains undiscovered. The incident, which prosecutors categorize as a revenge murder, began as a missing person case back in 2018.
On January 11, 2018, Raymond Wright mysteriously vanished, prompting concern among his loved ones. Just two days later, Wright’s brother discovered a stranger inside Raymond’s home. The intruder hastily fled the scene but left behind a significant piece of evidence—a drinking cup.
It wasn’t until January 18 that the authorities located Wright’s truck, albeit without the 55-year-old man. It took another five days for a breakthrough in the case when Victor Merle Gray led police on a pursuit while under the influence, ultimately crashing his vehicle.
During the subsequent search of Gray’s van, investigators uncovered compelling evidence linked to Wright’s disappearance, including a blood-soaked raincoat, the victim’s wallet, and other personal belongings. Remarkably, a DNA hit confirmed that the aforementioned drinking cup belonged to Gray.
Adding to the intrigue, authorities found a letter authored by Gray, addressed to Robert Manor, expressing his dissatisfaction with Manor’s failure to address the individual who had “hand-delivered his revenge.” Sacramento prosecutors contend that Robert Manor had hired Gray to carry out the murder of Wright, stemming from a grudge related to a DUI crash in 2011 in which Wright was involved.
Despite Wright having served his sentence and completed probation for the DUI crash, it appeared Manor harbored lingering resentments. Investigators believe that this simmering grudge led Manor to hire Gray for the act of revenge. Notably, Ray Wright’s body has never been located.
Prosecutor Jennifer Mouzis noted the rarity of homicide cases tried without a body, highlighting the significant challenge faced by prosecutors in proving not only the defendant’s unlawful act but also the victim’s demise.
Nonetheless, a jury rendered convictions against both individuals on charges of murder and kidnapping, underscoring the complex nature of retribution cases.
