“Bad Romance,” the highly acclaimed true-crime series from ABC News’ “20/20,” is set to return with its third episode titled “Shot in the Dark” on February 5, 2024. This gripping limited series has quickly earned the title of being the No. 1-rated show in its genre.

In this episode, viewers will delve into a tragic high school love story that took a sinister turn. Riley, a football player, and Emma, a cheerleader, appeared to be the quintessential high school sweethearts. Their relationship began while they were both attending high school in Knoxville, Tennessee. However, what initially seemed like a picture-perfect romance soon soured as Riley’s behavior grew increasingly possessive, and he attempted to control every aspect of Emma’s life.

When Emma finally decided to end the relationship, a series of strange and bizarre events unfolded. Emma received mysterious text messages from an unknown number, claiming that someone had kidnapped Riley. A mysterious man dressed in black appeared at Emma’s home while she was alone, and Riley’s grandfather’s gun went missing. In a shocking and chilling turn of events, Emma was shot while asleep in her own home, through the walls. The mystery of who was behind this deadly shooting becomes the central focus.

To unravel this complex and harrowing story, a sting operation involving local police is launched, uncovering not only the identity of the killer but also shocking revelations. “Shot in the Dark” features interviews with Emma’s parents, Jill and Mark Walker, as well as friends of both Emma and Riley. Police detectives and the defense and prosecuting attorneys involved in Riley’s trial provide their insights and perspectives.
