Of the 15 countries that emerged following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Uzbekistan is the one that comes last alphabetically.

Uzbekistan, located in Central Asia, gained its independence from the Soviet Union on September 1, 1991, making it one of the 15 former Soviet republics to declare sovereignty in the wake of the USSR’s dissolution. The country is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Kyrgyzstan to the northeast, Tajikistan to the southeast, Afghanistan to the south, and Turkmenistan to the southwest, making it one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world, alongside Liechtenstein.
