Today’s Final Jeopardy
John Elwes, a millionaire member of parliament who would go to bed before dusk to save on candles, inspired this character
Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Ebenezer Scrooge
Final Jeopardy Explanation
John Elwes, a notorious miser and member of parliament, is widely believed to have inspired the character of Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens’ famous novella “A Christmas Carol.” Elwes was known for his extreme frugality despite his considerable wealth, going to great lengths to avoid spending money, such as going to bed before dusk to save on candle usage. His lifestyle, characterized by avoiding any unnecessary expenditures even at the cost of his own comfort and health, provided a real-life model for Dickens’ fictional miser. “A Christmas Carol,” first published in 1843, tells the story of Scrooge, a wealthy but stingy and cold-hearted old man who, through a series of ghostly visits, comes to realize the joy of generosity and transforms into a kinder, more charitable person.
