What Happened to Kelli Bordeaux?
Kelli Bordeaux, a 23-year-old soldier stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, was reported missing after a night out at Froggy Bottoms bar in Fayetteville on April 14, 2012. She was last seen with Nicholas Holbert, a registered sex offender who worked at the bar. After two years of extensive searches and investigations, Holbert led authorities to Bordeaux’s remains in a wooded area near Interstate 295. An autopsy confirmed that she died from blunt force trauma to the head.
Nicholas Holbert, who initially denied involvement in Bordeaux’s disappearance, eventually confessed to killing her following an argument about his sex offender status. Holbert struck Bordeaux, knocking her unconscious, and then transported her to his makeshift camp in the woods where he beat her to death when she regained consciousness and started screaming. Holbert’s confession and cooperation with private investigator David Marshburn were crucial in locating Bordeaux’s body.
In court, Holbert pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping, receiving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. During the sentencing, he expressed remorse, but Bordeaux’s family rejected his apology. Her mother, Johnna Henson, voiced her pain and anger, stating she could never forgive Holbert for taking her daughter’s life.
Bordeaux’s disappearance and the subsequent investigation received significant media attention. The case highlighted the efforts of private investigator David Marshburn, whose persistence and unconventional methods ultimately led to the resolution of the case. Marshburn’s role in befriending Holbert and coaxing a confession out of him was instrumental in bringing closure to Bordeaux’s family.
Bordeaux was buried with full military honors in her hometown of St. Cloud, Florida. Her death underscored the vulnerabilities faced by young soldiers and brought attention to the broader issue of violence against women. Holbert’s sentencing marked the end of a tragic chapter for Bordeaux’s family, though the emotional scars and loss remained deeply felt.
