ABC 20/20 “Gone Before the Storm” August 23 2024 Recap & Preview
On August 23, 2024, ABC’s “20/20” will delve into the haunting case of Anthony Harris, who, at just 12 years old in 1998, confessed to the murder of his 5-year-old neighbor, Devan Duniver, in a small Ohio town. Despite his conviction, Harris and his legal team have long maintained his innocence, arguing that his confession was the result of intense police coercion and intimidation.
The program, hosted by John Quiñones, revisits the case more than 26 years later. It explores why Harris confessed to a crime he insists he did not commit and the lasting psychological trauma he endured. The investigation will also revisit the search for Duniver’s body in the woods behind her home and features interviews with key witnesses and search party members who reported seeing a suspicious individual during the search.
The episode will include insights from Tarin Hale, Harris’ public defender; Daniel Warren and Geoffrey Mearns, the lawyers involved in Harris’ appeal and civil lawsuit; and Dan Risinger, the police officer who first responded to the missing person report from Duniver’s mother. It also features commentary from journalists who extensively covered the case and legal experts.
Furthermore, “20/20” will reexamine archival footage of Quiñones’ 1999 interview with Harris, as well as new interviews with Devan’s mother, Lori Duniver, and Anthony’s mother, Cyndi Harris. The program will also report on recent developments prompted by “20/20” interviews, including a renewed request from the district attorney for authorities to speak with witnesses, which has reignited the investigation.
