Today’s Final Jeopardy Answer – Tuesday, 26 November 2024
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Louis Brandeis
Final Jeopardy Explanation – Tuesday, 26 November 2024
The individual is Louis Brandeis, who in 1916 became the first U.S. Supreme Court nominee to undergo public Senate confirmation hearings. Born to Jewish immigrant parents from Bohemia (now the Czech Republic), Brandeis was a prominent lawyer and a leading progressive before his nomination to the Court by President Woodrow Wilson. His nomination was controversial and faced significant opposition due to his progressive views and activism, particularly his stances on business regulation and social justice.
This opposition prompted the Senate to hold its first public confirmation hearings for a Supreme Court nominee. The hearings lasted more than four months, during which Brandeis’s supporters and detractors debated his qualifications and philosophy. Ultimately, he was confirmed and went on to serve on the Supreme Court until 1939, where he became known for his advocacy for privacy, free speech, and other civil liberties. His tenure on the Court left a lasting legacy on American law and progressive jurisprudence.
