On October 31, 2020, in the small town of Hemphill, Texas, Darci Bass received devastating news: her daughter, 21-year-old Livye Lewis, had been shot in her car along the side of the road. When investigators arrived at the scene, they found Livye’s ex-boyfriend, Matthew Edgar, bloodied and disoriented. From his hospital bed, Edgar insisted he had no memory of the events that led to Livye’s death. In sheriff’s office bodycam footage, Edgar appears confused, saying, “I have no clue why I’m here,” but many questioned whether his memory loss was a convenient excuse.

In this gripping episode, 48 Hours correspondent Peter Van Sant follows the investigation, unraveling the details surrounding Livye’s tragic death. Sabine County Sheriff’s investigator J.P. MacDonough believed Edgar was hiding the truth and arrested him as the prime suspect. However, Edgar’s supporters, including his friend Shaun Dunn, believe he was a victim, not the killer, and that someone else close to him may have been responsible.

The episode takes viewers through the twists and turns of the investigation, as authorities piece together the events of that fateful night. Was Matthew Edgar guilty of murder, or is there more to the story than meets the eye?

Tune in for this captivating episode of 48 Hours, airing Saturday, January 4, 2024, at 10:00 PM ET/PT on CBS. The episode will also be available for streaming on Paramount+ the next day.
